Jesus and Jigga

jay-z-rocUsually known for his subliminal shots instead of addressing “beef” directly, rapper Jay-Z has finally taken the direct approach to the latest claims of him being a devil worshipper. He responds to the widely viewed video  that suggests he goes against Jesus. This most recent attack is on the verse in  his song ” Empire State of Mind”  featuring Alicia Keys where he says:

“Jesus can’t save you, life starts when the church ends”

Watch the video to see what a young minister is saying about the rapper

He talked to radio host Egypt and addressed the claims:

Jay-Z  responds:

“He should be arrested, seriously. My position is not unlike anyone else who ascends to the top of their field. That comes with the game. But that’s crazy. That might be the craziest one I’ve had.”

Egypt asked: “But do you go to church?”

Jay-Z:

“Nah, I’m more spiritual than [having] organized religion. I have a personal relationship with God…I believe in karma, I believe in cause and effect…but religion, I have my opinions about religion.”

My 2 cents:

As a former, DIE HARD Jay-Z fan this a subject that I feel strongly about. I’ve strayed away from speaking about it until now.  For my readers who aren’t familiar; when I say I was a die hard fan I really was. I liked his music but my fan status was confirmed after attending the Hard Knock Life concert in 10th grade. I will never forget that concert. I went with a group of my closest high school friends. Looking back, we were sort of like a stand out group of smart, witty, middle class kids in the Midwest who had east coast lovers written all over us. Attending an inner city school, wearing Abercrombie& Fitch, listening to Jay-Z, and making straight A’s wasn’t very typical. Anyway, after that concert I was hooked. It was all about Jay from that point on. Every album, every concert, every interview, and every website that had anything to do with Jay I was on. Bored one day in my dorm freshmen year, my creative juices were flowing and I made a small 8 x 11 inch collage with pics of him from my recent urban magazine subscriptions. New college friends (mainly dudes) were impressed and surprised that a girl like me actually liked  loved Jay-Z.  I knew it was a problem when I found myself quoting Jay-Z rhymes when asked for advice. His music really made me feel like I knew him.  By senior year, that collage turned into a full out 18 x 24 inch size poster.  In addition to his music I respected his business savvy. I used to tell my BF I just wanna sit down and talk to him. #TrueStory I secretly believed that on one of my trips to New York I was going to meet him and my girl crush Beyonce. #dontjudgeme

My personal conviction didn’t come until years later in 2007 when I read a scripture in Genesis 22:

14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah Jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.

Some might read this and not understand so let me break it down for you.

JEHOVAH JIREH  translated means THE GOD THAT PROVIDES. The name is literally, The Lord Who Sees, or The Lord Who Will See To It. This is what we long for when we have a personal need that can only come from GOD. JEHOVAH can also be translated to mean GOD, Creator, Savior, or even Jesus. For me it means The Lord Who will see to it that my every need is met at the right time just as He did for Abraham.

Jay-Z calls himself  Hova, J. Hov, Hov, which are all shortened versions of JEHOVAH because he believes he’s the “savior” of the rap game and as he likes to call himself,  a ”god MC”.

Now some might not be offended by that but I am! What gives this man the audacity to call himself a shortened version of JEHOVAH?  There is power in that name. That name is what I believe in for wisdom, healing, deliverance, prosperity, and peace. What do I look like chanting “hova, hova, hova” to some rapper who can’t do ANYTHING for me in the time of trouble? Once that was revealed to me I had to stop being a fan.

He said he believes in God but he DOES NOT ADDRESS the name of Jesus. If he does believe in Jesus why didn’t he say yes, I believe in Jesus? There is a big difference between believing in God (or a higher power) and having faith in JESUS. This is where the religion aspect comes in. Some people that are against organized religion believe Jesus is just a character of the Christian “religion” and there are many Jesus- like figures in every religion. I’ve said in times past that’s it not about religion but it’s about relationship. I don’t have the authority to judge his relationship with God but what I do know is: No one comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6)

AS A CHRISTIAN, I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER, THE SON JESUS, AND THE HOLY SPIRIT.

How does a believer say: “Jesus can’t save you”? If Jesus can’t save you then who can? Whether this is metaphorically speaking or not I view it as blasphemous. If  its just word play find another metaphor! At some point during your Christian walk you will have to make tough choices that go against what the world views as “acceptable” and this was a choice I made to stop listening to his music. Not because I believe he is a devil worshipper that is apart of the Illuminati but because I was convicted when I sang/rapped along to his music.  I’m not suggesting that people stop listening to his music but these are just my thoughts. If I could, I would like to sit down and talk to him about his life, his beliefs, his lyrics, his “nick name”, and what he meant by “Jesus can’t save you”. Since this is the Internet, if someone knows Jay pass this link and my info along to him (LOL-I’m jokingly serious) I’d be interested to see what comes from our conversation because the current interviewers ARE NOT asking him the right questions!

…Interesting point… Guess I never get that deep w/ jay..

But Jehovah isn’t a proper hebrew word for God. We made that up by adding the vowels. JHVH YHWH… So, at the least he’s calling himself something that’s not even a biblical name for God, at the most he’s really feeling himself, lol.

I understand ur point tho.

This blog post is attached to a greater purpose. Deep, yes, but not because of the depth of logic, but more so because it was revealed to you through the Spirit of GOD, not an earthen suggestion derived from sense knowledge. LUCIFER, son of the morning, Archangel, so beautiful that when the world is judged men will not believe that some one so beautiful fooled them into hellfire. It will happen though. It is written. He’s serpent-like. So slick that he fooled a third of the angels from heaven. I mean, he fooled those that actually embodied heaven. We have neither visual, nor material portion of GOD in heaven so imagine the tests of faith facing us from LUCIFER’s perspective. Good insight TLP, I do agree that one of Satan’s many new approaches for this era is using people’s vocal repetition of music verses as a means to make a case against them when it comes to the manifestation of any provision believed to have come from life of JESUS. Now, as far as specifying Jay-Z…You certainly could for some of his remarks, but the fact that it’s way bigger than him still remains. Sad thing is…we’ll all find out at the same time. That time being too late for the world. As the “Apocalypse” by Stuart Ellis Heflin reads, “Sorry Charlie”.

It’s funny we just had this convo not too long ago. You still didn’t tell me just how obsessed you were with him tho! Sheesh! (Not judging) lol

It’s just too much turmoil I personally deal with going back and forth…I just made the decision to just stop. I know better and I feel like I’m dissing Christ every time I repeat a lyric. I’m glad you posted this!

Yeah from FB I remember your obsession with him…and though I never loved him like that, I dig him (kinda) but never was okay with him using Jehovah in that manner…no man on Earth has the right to be a god of ANYTHING. ((Plus I hate his usage of that diamond that is often too close to a pyramid:))

Great post! Was just talking about this with my brother recently. He LOVED him some Jay-Z, but has since stopped buying his music. Me? Have never been a fan…never listened to his songs…never bought his music…so on and so forth. So many great points you made and a lot of good talking points. Only want to encourage you to stay strong in your decision.

I am so dissapointed in Jay-Z. I can not believe that he would use his fame to defame JESUS CHRIST. If he doesn’t believe in Jesus Christ then that’s between him and the Lord. I think it is ridiculous for him to push his religious views onto people who admire him. He should be using his influence for something positive! It seems that he thinks he is “so big and powerful” that he can take on our Lord and Savior. I truely feel sorry for him and I am no longer a fan.

I think you make great points. Kudos! But have you asked yourself how many ppl in the world from other ethnicities have derivities of biblical names, Jesus, Mohammad, etc. Should we dislike them too? I think we should be more concerned on our own spirituality and connections with the Lord and not others b/c at the end of the day its your own soul that you’re being judged on.

I heard this about a month ago and found myself totally disgusted with Jay-Z and several other artists in the entertainment industry. Some people choose not to believe and would rather remain ignorant to what is taking place around us. You can run from it but u can’t hide…this is evidence of the beast worship that is spoken about in Revelation. As Christians we must remain strong in our faith because the devil is attacking all around us. The sad part is Jay-Z has been throwing his beliefs in our face for years…if you don’t believe me listen to lucifer from the black album.

GREAT COMMENTS!!!!!!

Just so that its clear, let me reiterate…I did not suggest that we shouldn’t like people who believe differently than we do. This is just my personal opinion on the situation. I am not judging Jay-Z or anyone who continues to listen to his music. The decision I made was not easy, neither was it completely my own. It was revealed to me and I stand by it whole heartedly. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me or even listen for that matter but I’m just using this blog as a platform to put it out there so to speak. Either way whoever reads this will never be able to say “they didn’t know”…

This is a great post! The first time I read it, I was like “she’s making this much more than what it is.” But, now I’m with you. Last week I saw the “On to the next one” video and I was almost floored by the imagery. First, the video has absolutely NOTHING to do with the song. Then, on top of that, the video is full of blatant demonic/anti-christ/wiccan symbolism (black/white (duality), the halo of light around his head throughout the video, the woman who looks just like the Aquarian symbol, etc.). It was very disturbing. As, soon as I saw the video I was reminded of you and this post. Now, it’s just too much for me. I can’t say for sure what Jay-Z’s on, but I do know that as a Christian I feel uncomfortable with whatever it is.

For those that are interested…Jay-Z sits down in a recent interview with Angie Martinez and addresses the rumors even further. He re-interates that he DOES in fact believe in God, he is NOT apart of a secret society but he DOES NOT believe in religion

Listen to part 2 of the interview over at Rap Radar http://rapradar.com/2010/01/13/jay-z-young-jeezy-trey-songz-interview-angie-martinez/
