I was reading an article Did You Really Just Say That? over at Clutch Magazine that addresses the top myths and stereotypes about Africa . The video in the post reignited my desire to visit South Africa. For those readers who don’t know I’ve always wanted to go. Unlike most people who want to go back to the “motherland” to find their roots, my interest came about in a slightly different way.
Back in 06-07 when I was in grad school, I interned in the International Programs Branch at CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). I worked closely with MDs and other researchers who conducted alot of HIV prevention and TB screening education in health clinics in Pretoria and Cape Town, South Africa. Seeing as I was just an intern I wasn’t able to travel internationally but their personal stories along with my interest in their international public health efforts made me want to visit. I have not buried my dream of wanting to go to the “motherland” and this video is exactly why! It shows another side of Africa that we never see. The beautiful scenery reminded me that I have yet to experience all of God’s majesty here on earth. I don’t know when or how but one day I KNOW I’m going to Africa.

It’s definitely a place to see. I visited South Africa in 2007 and it was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I had the chance to visit Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town and all three were beautiful in different ways. Cape Town was my favorite because it was full of so many unexpected surprises. I saw penguins at the beach and then miles down the road a giraffe. Then the nightlife was fun and the shopping was great. On top of that the history there and the people and culture were fantastic. I hope you get your opportunity to experience it too! (and thanks for stopping by my blog)
Thanks for sharing your experience!Hopefully I’ll be going sooner rather than later!
